Prediabetes in Minnesota
How many people in Minnesota have prediabetes?
- Around 1 in 3 (34%) of American adults have prediabetes.1 Using this number, as many as 1.5 million adult Minnesotans may have prediabetes.
- In 2020, only 8.7% percent of adults in Minnesota said their health care team told them they had prediabetes.2 Most Minnesotans with prediabetes do not know they have it.
- People with prediabetes are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.3
Who is at risk for prediabetes
- Older adults: Prediabetes is more common among older adults. Around 25 percent of 18 to 44 year-olds have prediabetes. This nearly doubles for adults 45 and older.1
- Overweight or obese adults: Two out of three adults in Minnesota were overweight or obese in 2020.2 People who are overweight or obese are more likely to have prediabetes than people who are normal weight.
- Adults who get little physical activity: In 2019, only 25.5% of Minnesota adults regularly got all recommended physical activity, which includes muscle strengthening and aerobic activity.2 Physical activity is associated with maintaining a healthy weight and lowering risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.
What are the economic costs of prediabetes?
- People with prediabetes can develop health problems usually associated with diabetes. These include early kinds of kidney disease, nerve damage and damaged blood vessels. The risk of stroke is also higher in people with prediabetes.3
- A national study suggested that 2012 medical costs for adults with prediabetes was $510 higher than costs for people without prediabetes.4
- The estimated medical costs of prediabetes in Minnesota for 2012 were $735 million.4
