UnitedHealthcare is a for-profit company headquartered in Minnetonka, Minnesota. UnitedHealthcare was founded in 1977 to manage the newly created Physicians Health Plan of Minnesota, an early health maintenance organization. Today, it is the insurance arm of UnitedHealth Group, Inc. and has a national presence, providing health benefit plans and services for large employers, managed care solutions to state Medicaid programs, and Medicare services. Optum is its health services platform. UnitedHealthcare has been operating as an insurance company in Minnesota, but did not offer plans in the small group market. In 2018, it announced its intention to enter the small group market in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. In February 2019, UnitedHealthcare of Illinois, Inc. became the first for-profit organization certified to operate as a health-maintenance organization in Minnesota.
